DOMAINE BERTAGNA
The Domaine
Presentation
In 1982, the Günther REH family (numerous wine ventures across the world) from Trier in the Moselle valley of Germany took over Domaine Bertagna. They bought it from Claude Bertagna who he himself created it in the 1950’s.\n\nSince 1988, the Domaine has been run by Eva Reh-Siddle. Over the past decade, the Domaine has been modernised thanks to a vast programme of technical investments. It has also increased its heritage by acquiring new vineyards.\n\nToday, Domaine Bertagna produces 18 different appellations of which 5 are Grands Crus and 7 Premiers Crus, situated between, in the south, Aloxe Corton (Corton and Corton Charlemagne) and to the North, Gevrey Chambertin (Chambertin).\n\nThis wonderful diverse range of appellations, covering 21 ha, enables Bertagna to be part of the top ranking Domains in Burgundy.\n\nLocated just a few hundreds metres away from the famous Château de Clos de Vougeot, and overlooking the vines from the Vougeot appellation , the Domain also benefits from a perfect setting right in the heart of the Village.

Philosophy and Vines
Eva Reh-Siddle’s leitmotiv is "the wine is made in the vineyards"…. That means that 80% of the final quality of the wines comes from all the efforts made all year long by our ‘vignerons’. Quality and precision are our warhorses. \n\nThe Domaine therefore does not neglect its needs as far as human resources are concerned. A team of eight make up the vineyard staff (this figure surpasses 40 for the manual harvest), whilst two people take care of the cellars all year long.\n\nThe vines (planted with a minimum of 10 000 vines per hectare) do not receive any chemical treatments. Instead of using pesticides, harmful insects are controlled by using sexual confusion capsules. Along with this philosophy for reasoned prevention and ecologically rational policy, the quality of the grapes has improved enormously with very concentrated and enhanced aromas being the direct results of strictly controlled yields (green harvesting).\n\nThe success of Domaine Bertagna wines is without a doubt largely thanks to the passion and talent of its winemakers. Within this modern era of Bertagna, the current winemaker at the Hospices de Beaune, Roland Masse, worked with Eva for 18 years until he left in 1999. Since the 2000 vintage, Claire Forestier took over the Estate Management and wine making.\n\nHer philosophy is in complete harmony with that of Eva as far as respecting the soil and ‘terroir’, working hard in the vineyards whilst all the same seeking purity of the fruit, a good balanced structure and producing elegant, and silky wines.
